Noche En Tulum Elopement: Stay at Home Tablescape

In my heart, I am a wanderluster with a gypsy soul who craves a life of clean eating, knowledge through exploration, and satisfaction derived from simple pleasures. So that’s why for my latest Stay at Home Tablescape I was inspired by one of my favorite places that I’m longing to get back to—Tulum. It is one of the most magical places I have ever been and I’m not just saying that because I honeymooned there for two weeks. One of the things I fell in love with was the effortless, raw minimalism you see everywhere you go combined with modern elements that pay homage to the natural surroundings of jungle and sea. My latest tablescape was inspired by dining at one with the natural elements that surround me in and around my home.

The first step in my process is to create the design board (also my favorite part!). For this tablescape I wanted to focus entirely on earthy natural tones and bring in some additional natural color using succulents I already had around my home. And If you know me, then you know I absolutely love macrame. I’m pretty obsessed with the texture it brings to any tablescape and the ability to dress it up or down for a more casual vibe. Since I already own a beautiful macrame table runner, I thought it would be perfect piece to tie together the entire look. Plus, macrame is a popular design element used in Tulum.

The spirit of the Stay at Home Tablescape series is to use what I already have at home, but for each table I allow myself one “cheat item.” For this tablescape I purchased these gorgeous terracotta napkins. After styling my first tablescape, I realized I had quite the severe napkin deficit. I also could not resist the color of these beauties! If you look closely, I also decided to style them with the seams showing to add some additional texture to the table.

Next I needed to figure out where to set up, style, and shoot. I had originally planned on filling up the car and driving to a local park but while sitting outside one day in my VERY small outdoor living space, I noticed the rough texture below the siding of my apartment building’s wall. There’s also some natural stonework, moss, and a pebble moat. That’s when I knew this was it. This was my little slice of Tulum right here. I love when these kind of “happy little accidents” just happen and I’m so excited to share the final tablescape with you.

So what do you think? For me, designing and styling this table was one of my favorite tablescapes to date. It just feels so effortless but full of little details at the same time. I could see it setup somewhere deep in the Tulum jungle surrounded by candles, pillows, and the smell of copal. I can’t wait to return to the turquoise waters, beautiful sandy beaches, lush jungle, and the simplicity of it all. But for now, I’ll settle for this little backyard oasis :)
